(a reaction to the contemplations of a secular Jew on the same topic)
Both had pure intentions: sacrifice to God. But in Cain's sacrifice there was an element of impurity... He noticed this impurity and this realization clashed with his desire to please God and to be pure (a desire all God's children have). He was the first man to see that he cannot please God.
